About Peoria Rivermen

Peoria proudly boasts its own professional hockey team, the Rivermen, who compete in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Peoria-based team proudly plays at the Carver Arena in Illinois, USA. The Peoria Rivermen were granted a new identity when the previous team of the same name, owned by Vancouver Canucks, relocated to Utica, New York. Since their addition to the SPHL in 2013–14, Bloomington Thunder has been joined by fellow northern teams Evansville Thunderbolts and Quad City Storm. The Rivermen remain one of the only non-southern United States based teams competing in this prestigious sports league. On May 13, 2013 the Peoria Journal Star reported that after hearing about their AHL team's discontinuation, former Rivermen executives John Butler and Bart Rogers as well as owner Bruce Saurs decided to take action by submitting an application for admission into the Southern Professional Hockey League- in order to keep hockey alive in Peoria. Butler and Rogers sought to breathe new life into the SPHL, a minor hockey league with clubs located primarily in the southeastern United States.

As part of their plan, they proposed purchasing the struggling Central Hockey League's Bloomington Blaze franchise and relocating it to become an integral member of this organization. On the morning of May 14, 2013, a critical gathering was held between the SPHL Board of Governors and franchised general managers to determine if the Rivermen and Blaze teams would be allowed into their organization. On May 15, 2013, it was officially announced that the team had been welcomed into the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League), along with Bloomington Thunder - a newly formed hockey organization. The news ended any doubts as to whether or not Peoria would have a minor professional hockey squad in the following year. Both teams were owned by Illinois Pro Sports LLC. After one year, the Thunder was extinguished when a new ownership team acquired an expansion squad in the junior United States Hockey League located in Bloomington. Consequently, this left their northern rivals - The Rivermen - isolated and alone. One of their rivals include Vermilion County Bobcats.
