The Mississippi Sea Wolves are a professional hockey club based in Biloxi, Mississippi and they play at the esteemed Mississippi Coast Coliseum. As members of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL), this team is no stranger to success. It’s actually a revival of an earlier ECHL squad by the same name – thus making it an iconic “phoenix club” with a history rooted deep within its identity! The ECHL's Sea Wolves were founded in 1996 and flourished during their 10-year stint. Notable accolades include five playoff appearances within the first seven years, along with a Kelly Cup win against the Richmond Renegades for an impressive championship title in 1999. As a result of the devastating impacts of Hurricane Katrina, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum was destroyed and forced the team to cease operations for two consecutive seasons due to ECHL's hardship regulations. The destructive force of Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the Sea Wolves' home arena, devastating offices, locker rooms, and equipment such as their two Zambonis and ice-making apparatus. Nevertheless, during the 2006–07 ECHL All-Star Game it was announced that the team would be back for 2007–08 season.
On March 30, 2009, the Sea Wolves regrettably declared that they would be halting their operations and suspending play for the upcoming 2009-10 season. Just one month following this announcement, the team's management declared that professional hockey would continue its presence on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the form of the Mississippi Surge within the Southern Professional Hockey League. For five consecutive years, beginning in 2009–10 and ending with the 2013–14 season, The Surge thrilled audiences at Coast Coliseum. On December 30th, the Sea Wolves proudly declared their return to Biloxi in 2022 after selling 20,163 tickets throughout the month of December. This was made possible due to three neutral site games that were hosted by Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) earlier this year. On April 27th, 2022 the team joyfully declared that Phil Esposito, a former ECHL player and successful FPHL Head Coach with multiple titles under his belt, will be their very first head coach in its FPHL history.
