About Mississauga Steelheads

Located in the city of Mississauga, Canada, the Mississauga Steelheads are a competitive junior ice hockey team that competes in Ontario Hockey League. The Steelheads proudly call the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga their home turf. The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) was first established in Mississauga, its founding team was the Mississauga IceDogs. From 1998 to 2007, the Mississauga IceDogs were a pivotal part of the city's sports culture. In 2006, they were purchased by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and went on to bring more success in their final year. After the completion of the 2006-2007 season, Melnyk sold his Icedogs to relocate them to St Catherines and rename them as Niagara IceDogs.

Concurrently, Melynk relocated Toronto's St. Michael’s Majors hockey team to Mississauga where they were then known as the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. From 2007 to 2012, the Mississauga Majors proudly held home court and even hosted the prestigious 2011 Memorial Cup. In 2012, after a successful season, Melnyk transferred ownership of the Majors to Elliott Kerr from Landmark Sport Group in Mississauga. The Majors identity was restored to its rightful owner, St. Michael's College, as part of the sale agreement; consequently allowing Steelheads fans to move forward with their beloved moniker. In 2017-18, Mississauga dropped to the Eastern Conference basement after finishing 7th overall and 4th in the Central Division. For the second time in a row, the Barrie Colts trumped the Steelheads in 6 games during the playoffs' first round. In 2018–19, Mississauga dominated the lower tier of OHL East's standings, finishing in 5th place but leaving a substantial gap between themselves and Sudbury in 4th by accumulating 20 points more.

During the playoffs, the Wolves quickly defeated Mississauga in an impressive 4-game sweep. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the 2019–20 OHL season was canceled before the completion of both regular and postseason play. As a result, sadly there were no records broken or champions crowned for either The J. Ross Robertson Cup or the 2020 Memorial Cup held in Kelowna. Despite canceling their season midway through, the Steelheads were sitting in a solid 6th place in the OHL's Eastern Conference with an admirable record of 27-29-4-1 and 17 points up on 9th place. Had they been able to finish out their season, it would have marked their 7th consecutive playoff appearance in 8 seasons - quite an accomplishment!
