Celebrating the winning spirit of Knoxville, the Ice Bears are a professional ice hockey team that proudly competes in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The intense showdowns take place at none other than Knoxville Civic Coliseum in Tennessee. On April 18, 2015, the Ice Bears celebrated a monumental victory against the Mississippi River Kings with an astonishing 4–2 score in Game 3 of the SPHL Finals. This marked their fourth President's Cup Championship since 2006 when they first won it against Florida Seals and achieved back-to-back wins in the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons. In 2002, the Knoxville Ice Bears made their debut in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League as a founding member. The following year saw them finish second to Orlando Seals, however, they soon found success when moving to South East Hockey League and becoming its inaugural team.
Subsequently, they concluded the 2003-04 season in second place in the playoffs to their rivals, the Huntsville Channel Cats. Subsequent to that, the team joined a new hockey league - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) which marked its inception in 2004. During the SPHL's initial season, the Ice Bears accomplished success and won the Commissioner's Cup for regular-season champions. However, they experienced disappointment after being eliminated in the second round of playoffs (after a first-round bye) to what would become some successful opponents - The Columbus Cottonmouths who went on to be crowned as champions. On June 29, 2010, the inevitable happened - head coach Marc Rodgers and the Ice Bears separated. It remained unclear whether he was fired or chose to resign on his own accord. On August 2, 2010, the Ice Bears proudly welcomed Mike Craigen as their new head coach. An alumnus of the team from 2004 to 2008 and a native of Buckhorn, Ontario Canada - Craigen was a perfect fit for the role.
The Knoxville Ice Bears celebrated two President's Cup Championships in 2006 and 2008 with him on their side. Unfortunately, the 2010-11 season was a major setback for them - they finished sixth out of eight teams. On October 9, 2012, the team eagerly revealed their partnership with Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League to host a Huntsville preseason game at Bridgestone Arena-the Predator's own home ice- on October 20. After six years of longing for a President's Cup victory, the Ice Bears finally made it happen on April 18th, 2015! Bryan Hince was awarded SPHL Playoffs MVP after making five consecutive wins during playoffs and only allowing an average of two goals each game. It ended up being one incredible night full of joyous celebration- his amazing performance truly deserved recognition. On May 15, 2017, the Ice Bears organization opted to part ways with head coach Mike Craigen and announced Jeff Carr as his replacement in June. Some of the rivals include Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
