In 2015-16, the City of Evansville and Ron Geary, owner of ECHL's IceMen hockey team, were unable to reach a mutual accord on leasing terms for their venue at Ford Center. On the 19th of January 2016, Geary proclaimed that he had come to an agreement with Owensboro, Kentucky to transport the crew over to the nearby Owensboro Sports Center. On February 8, 2016, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke declared that Mike Hall - a prominent business owner and season ticket holder for the local IceMen team - had secured an expansion franchise in the Southern Professional Hockey League to play at the Ford Center starting with the 2016–17 season.
Unfortunately, this destroyed plans for future games of Evansville's beloved home team: The IceMen.On March 1, Evansville took a giant step forward by signing an agreement with the newest team to play at the Ford Center for a five-year lease. Hall was appointed as the general manager by VW Sports, LLC., a subsidiary of VenuWorks, Inc. - an industry-leading arena management company. On March 22, 2016, the IceMen declared Jeff Pyle as their head coach for its inaugural season - a momentous occasion. On April 15, 2016, the city of Evansville unveiled its new team name in honor of the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft that was produced there during the second world war. At the conclusion of the inaugural season, Mike Hall sold his share of ownership to VW Sports, LLC. For the 2017-2018 season, Pete Xander was appointed to be the new General Manager.
Following two successful seasons, Head Coach Pyle made the move to take on the head coaching position of the Atlanta Gladiators in the ECHL. During the 2018-19 season, Ian Moran - a former NHL player - took over as head coach while Adam Stio was appointed general manager. As a result, Pyle was unable to fulfill either of his duties. Consequently, the team ended in last place and Stio--the general manager--was discharged at the end of the season while Moran resigned from his position. Jeff Bes, a veteran coach of the SPHL was selected as Head Coach for the 2019-2020 season, with Patrick Kelly appointed to serve as the new General Manager. The 2019–20 SPHL season was abruptly ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic while the Thunderbolts were in a position of potentially qualifying for postseason play. In preparation for their 2021–22 return, the Thunderbolts brought on Bob McNamara as General Manager to guide them toward success.
