About Dawn at the Downs

Dawn at the Downs is a beloved racing event that has been around since the early 20th century. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Dawn at the Downs is one of the oldest and most popular horse racing events in the United States. Home to some of the world’s greatest horses, Dawn at the Downs has become synonymous with top-notch equine competition. The track hosts several major races throughout the year including its signature event, The Kentucky Derby. Over its long history, Dawn at the Downs has developed rivalries with other tracks such as Churchill Downs and Keeneland Race Course. The track boasts an impressive list of awards and honors, including being recognized as one of America’s Best Horse Racing Tracks by USA Today in 2020. The track also holds several records for attendance numbers and wagering totals during its biggest events like The Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup World Championships. In addition to hosting major races each year, Dawn at the Downs also offers simulcast betting on races from other tracks around the country. Leading up to 2023, Dawn at the Downs will be led by head coach Steve Asmussen who took over in 2021 after Bob Baffert retired from his post as head coach of the track’s racing program.

Asmussen brings a wealth of experience to his new role having trained numerous champion horses over his career including Curlin who won three Eclipse Awards for Horse of the Year (2007-2009). Asmussen has already made his mark on Dawn at The Down’s program by leading it to a successful start in 2021 with multiple graded stakes wins under his belt already this year. The highlight of any race day at Dawn At The Downs is watching some of horse racing's top racers compete against each other for victory. One such racer is Maximum Security who won last year's Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes and was named American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse for 2019 by both Eclipse Awards and Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Poll voters. Other notable racers include Authentic who won last year’s Breeders' Cup Classic; Swiss Skydiver who won two Grade I races last season; Tiz The Law who won three Grade I races; and Improbable who won two Grade I races last season. 2023 promises to be an exciting year for fans of horse racing as they get ready for another great season at Dawn At The Downs! With a talented roster full of experienced veterans and promising newcomers alike, there is no doubt that this track will once again provide some thrilling competition throughout the season as they strive to crown another champion come springtime!
