About Savannah Ghost Pirates

The Savannah Ghost Pirates are an ECHL ice hockey team in Savannah, Georgia. They began to play in the 2015-16 season, and are affiliated with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League and the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League in North America. Their home games are played at the Savannah Civic Center. The Ghost Pirates made their debut on October 16, 2015, against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. They won their first game in franchise history 3-2 in overtime. On January 27, 2016, the team set a franchise record for most goals scored in a game when they defeated the Orlando Solar Bears 9-3. On March 16, 2016, the Ghost Pirates clinched their first-ever playoff berth with a 3-2 overtime win against the South Carolina Stingrays. The Ghost Pirates have had some success over the past few seasons and are looking to continue that trend in the near future.

They finished the regular season in fourth place in the South Division with a record of 32-28-6-2. In the playoffs, the Ghost Pirates faced off against the Orlando Solar Bears in the best-of-seven first-round series. The Solar Bears won the series 4-1, ending the Ghost Pirates' season. Despite not making it past the first round of the playoffs, the Ghost Pirates had a successful inaugural season. They finished with a record of 32-28-6-2, good for fourth place in the South Division. Last May 19, 2022, the Ghost Pirates proudly declared a one-year pact with two entities belonging to the National Hockey League (NHL) and American Hockey League (AHL): The Vegas Golden Knights and their AHL affiliate, Henderson Silver Knights. Furthermore, it was declared that Rick Bennett - a former NHL player and head coach of the Union Dutchmen hockey team - would be the inaugural head coach for Savannah's franchise.

The team competes in the South Division alongside the Atlanta Gladiators, Florida Everblades, Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Jacksonville Icemen, Orlando Solar Bears, and South Carolina Stingrays - with a potential addition of Athens ECHL for 2024 should divisional realignment occur. The addition of Savannah to the league generated a domino effect, leading Norfolk Admirals into North Division and consequently affording all divisions 7 teams. The Icemen and Solar Bears have been the team's most frequent opponents, playing one another 8 times each season. The team plays at home in the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena, located on the corner of Stiles and Anderson Streets in downtown Savannah. This multi-purpose arena is home to the Savannah Bananas baseball team, as well as other special events such as concerts, festivals, and conventions.
