The Iowa Heartlanders are a thrilling professional ice hockey team located in Coralville, Iowa that competes within the ECHL. Starting the 2021-22 campaign, the team will perform at their home games venue Xtream Arena in an ECHL season. The ECHL is the top-tier "Double A" Hockey League in North America, with an impressive 700+ of its alums who have gone on to play for the National Hockey League. On October 22nd, 2021 the Heartlanders' inaugural contest against their opponents from Kansas City Mavericks resulted in a triumphant 7-4 victory with over 4000 spectators at home. In November, Kris Bennett was inducted as the inaugural captain of the team, with Jake Linhart and Riese Zmolek appointed to serve in alternate roles.
The Heartlanders ended their first season with a record of 29 victories, including an all-time franchise-high seven-game win streak from mid-February to early March 2022. Embracing a remarkable opportunity, Gerry Fleming - former Head Coach - decided to join the DEL (Deutsche Eishockey Liga) in Frankfurt, Germany for the summer of 2022. By making the move, Fleming's assistant coach Derek Damon was presented with an opportunity to become the Head Coach. On July 5, 2022, Damon made history by becoming the second coach of his team.
