The mighty Cincinnati Cyclones are an ECHL ice hockey team hailing from the great city of Cincinnati, Ohio. Joining forces with other talented teams in the East Coast Hockey League, they strive for greatness both on and off the rink! Established in 1990, the team initially had their home games at the Cincinnati Gardens and presently plays their matches at Heritage Bank Center. The Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League proudly sponsor their minor league affiliate, The Cyclones. The city of Cincinnati has had three distinct franchises playing the sport of hockey with two different leagues: the International Hockey League (1992–2001), and ECHL (1990-1992, 2001–2004, 2006 until now). The combination of the two franchises has achieved remarkable success, winning not one but two Kelly Cups (2008 and 2010), three conference championships (2008, 2010, and 2014!), an impressive overall points championship in both 2008 and 2019 as well as five division titles (1996, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2019)! In 2007–08, the team achieved a milestone in ECHL history with an impressive 55 wins and 115 points. This season marked their first conference and league championships as well. February 27th, 2016 marked an extraordinary evening at the US Bank Arena with a record-breaking crowd of 16,529 coming out to support Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night and take advantage of the one-dollar pizza slices. The Cyclones had their first sellout in team history that night. Despite the final score reading 3-2 in favor of Indy Fuel, US Bank Arena welcomed its largest audience ever for a professional hockey game - no small feat considering it has been open for 41 years. The Cincinnati Cyclones' performance that evening was one to remember. After a decade of collaboration, the Nashville Predators and Milwaukee Admirals decided to discontinue their partnership with the Cyclones prior to the 2017–18 season. The Cyclones then partnered with the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans. This isn't the initial time that Buffalo has associated itself with a Cincinnati hockey team, with their affiliation from long ago being connected to the Cincinnati Swords of the 1970s. Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Matt Mcdonald was welcomed as an assistant coach by Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League. Matt Thomas took the helm and steered the team toward achieving their regular season title as well as a second Brabham Cup in franchise history, which earned him recognition with the prestigious John Brophy Award for head coach of the year. Despite their consistent performance throughout the regular season, the team fell short in the division finals against Toledo Walleye by a score of four games to one. Ice hockey fans, rejoice!
