The Saskatchewan Roughriders are a professional Canadian football team based in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Roughriders compete in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member club of the league's West division. The team was founded in 1910 as the Regina Rugby Club, playing rugby union football. They changed their name to the Regina Roughriders in 1924 and finally to their current name in 1946. The team has played their home games at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field since 1936. The Roughriders are the third-oldest professional gridiron football team in North America, founded only a year behind the first-ever such team, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Until 1974, professional football in Regina was also featured in the now-defunct Western Canada Rugby Football Union (WCRFU). Regina's general manager from 1910 to 1927 was Frank Westcox, who served as the WCRFU president from 1912 to 1915.
Westcox was succeeded by Archie Farquharson, who remained with the Roughriders until 1961, though general manager duties would be handled by others for a few years during that time. Despite their historic longevity, the Roughriders have had only two winning seasons since 1977 and only three playoff appearances since then; they have never won a Grey Cup. Nevertheless, they are the most popular sports team in Saskatchewan (ahead of the province's other professional teams, the NHL's Saskatoon Blades and WHL's Regina Pats) and attract fans from across the province and country. The Roughriders play in the smallest market in the CFL, and their fan base is often credited for keeping the team afloat financially during lean years. Twenty members of the team have been honored by the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
