The Calgary Stampeders are a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta. The Stampeders compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The team plays its home games at McMahon Stadium and is the third-oldest active professional sports franchise in North America, dating back to 1945. The Stampeders were officially founded in 1945, although there were a few unofficial teams operating in Calgary as early as 1909. The Calgary Rugby Football Union was formed in 1909 and went on to compete for the Grey Cup four times, winning twice (in 1921 and 1932). Another team, the Calgary Bronks, also competed for the Grey Cup three times (1937–1939) but never won. The current team was officially founded in 1945 and has gone on to become one of the most successful teams in the CFL.
The team has participated in 17 Grey Cup Championship games and has won eight Grey Cups, the most recent of which was in 2018. In the history of the franchise, they have won 20 Western Division Championships and one Northern Division Championship. At the 2018 CFL Awards, Bo Levi Mitchell not only earned Most Outstanding Player but also Grey Cup MVP - affirming his remarkable talent. Lemar Durant was awarded the prestigious title of Most Valuable Canadian for his superior performance in the game. In 2019, the team was unable to make a fourth consecutive Grey Cup appearance and finished second in the West with an impressive 12–6 record. Unfortunately, they fell to eventual Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West Semi-Final by a score of 35–14.
After a one-year hiatus, the CFL returned in 2021 with the Stampeders finishing just behind the Saskatchewan Roughriders after an abbreviated season, boasting an impressive 8–6 record. The team's early playoff dreams were dashed after a heartbreaking 33–30 overtime loss to the Riders in the West Semi-Final. Two years later, they returned with renewed vigor and ended the season 12–6, but ultimately met their demise at second place BC Lions' hands in another semi-final bout 30–16. The Stampeders have had three players inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: John Helton, Larry Robinson, and Dickie Harris. They have also had four players named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame: Doug Flutie, Jeff Nicklin, Dave Sapunjis, and Allen Pitts.
