Álvarez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He comes from a boxing family; his father and two uncles were professional boxers. His older brother Rigoberto Álvarez is also a professional boxer.

Álvarez made his professional boxing debut at the age of 15 on October 5, 2005, knocking out Abraham González in the second round. The fight ended in a split draw. In 2017, he defeated Golovkin in a rematch to become the new lineal and WBC middleweight champion.

In 2018, Álvarez moved up to the super middleweight division and defeated Rocky Fielding to win the WBA (Super) title. In 2019, he moved up again to the light heavyweight division and defeated Sergey Kovalev to become the new WBO light heavyweight champion.

Álvarez is known for his formidable punching power, technical boxing skills, and counterpunching ability. He has also been praised for his adaptability inside the ring, as he has been able to adjust his fight plan according to the style of his opponents.

In May 2021, it was announced that Álvarez had signed a five-year, eleven-fight deal with streaming service DAZN worth a record-breaking $365 million. Under the terms of the deal, Álvarez will earn a guaranteed $35 million per fight, as well as a 20% stake in DAZN's future profits. The deal also includes an exclusive live and on-demand content partnership between Álvarez and DAZN.
