Representing the University of South Carolina, the Gamecocks women's basketball team is a powerhouse in the Southeastern Conference under current head coach Dawn Staley. After winning their first NCAA Championship in 2017, they continued to flourish and achieved another title victory in 2022. The team has become one of college sports' elite programs with this recent success! The Gamecocks have been taking part in intercollegiate competitions since 1923, initially under the name "Pullets" - a clever play on the words of their team's mascot. A Pullet is an immature domestic hen; and just like a Gamecock (a rooster), she stands tall with strength and fortitude! Pam Backhaus guided the Carolina Chicks to court in January 1974, and they made quite an impression, compiling a record of 15-7 and becoming AIAW South Carolina champions.
This marked the beginning of modern-era women's basketball for SC! In 1977, with Pam Parsons taking charge as head coach, their nickname was changed to Lady Gamecocks; under her guidance post-season trips were made yearly during her four-year tenure. The Lady Gamecocks have been thriving ever since! Under the tutelage of Head Coach Dawn Staley, South Carolina has emerged as a formidable venue for opponents, earning its place among some of the toughest home courts in the country. The Gamecocks pride themselves on their home turf, Colonial Life Arena. This state-of-the-art basketball arena cost an impressive $64 million to build and has a seating capacity of up to 18,000 passionate fans. Opened in 2002, this modernized facility has become a destination for sports lovers from all over the world. On April 3, 2022, the Gamecocks made history by winning their second national championship with a 64–49 victory over UConn. With an impressive 35-2 season record and is ranked #1 in both major polls for all of that time period - this feat was truly extraordinary!
