The Niagara River Lions are a professional basketball team based in St. Catharines, Ontario, and are members of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). Since their establishment in 2017, the River Lions have become one of the top teams in the league, winning two CEBL championships and making four playoff appearances. The team plays its home games at Meridian Centre, located on the downtown St. Catharines waterfront. Over the years, the River Lions have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including Hamilton Honey Badgers and Edmonton Stingers. Mahlalela has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both CEBL and National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA). The River Lions are led by some of Canada's top players such as guard Ryan Anderson who was named First Team All-CEBL last season after averaging 13 points per game; forward Jonathan Tull who was named Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 12 rebounds per game; center Maurice Jones Jr., who had 11 points per game last season; forward Thomas Scrubb who had 10 points per game; and guard Johnny Berhanemeskel who had nine assists per game last season. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Niagara River Lions will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence.
