Representing Iowa State University and competing in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA Division I, the Iowa State Cyclones Women's Basketball Team is a force to be reckoned with. Under the experienced guidance of Bill Fennelly, who is currently in his 28th year with Iowa State, the Cyclones play their home games at the Hilton Coliseum. This arena resides on campus and consistently provides spectators with a thrilling experience. Under Fennelly, Iowa State made their debut in the NCAA tournament (1997), won an impressive victory during their first game (1998), and hosted five consecutive NCAA opening and second-round matches from 1998 to 2002 when host sites were determined by performance rather than preselected.
Under Fennelly's guidance, the Cyclones achieved their first national ranking at #22 and he was recognized nationally as runner-up for the Associated Press (AP) Head Coach of the Year in 1998 and returned to the Sweet 16. Iowa State University made history when Stacy Frese became their first-ever Associated Press All-American in 1999. Iowa State achieved historical successes in the Big 12 Conference, winning not one but two tournament championships (2000–2001) and their first regular season title (2000). In an even more momentous victory, Iowa State took down then-#1 ranked Texas Tech for its first post-season Final Four appearance in the WNIT 2004.
