The University of Denver’s women’s basketball program has been a mainstay in the city since 1971. Under head coach Kerry Cremeans, the Pioneers have experienced success both on the court and off it. The team plays their home games at Magness Arena, where they enjoy strong support from the DU community. The Pioneers have built strong rivalries with former conference opponents like Kansas State, Colorado State, and Wyoming. In addition to playing tough in-state opponents, Denver also faces off against some of the nation’s top teams like UCLA and Michigan State. Throughout their history, the Pioneers have enjoyed great success. They won the WAC Championship in 1990, 2001, 2003, and 2015.
They also appeared in the NCAA tournament for four consecutive years during that period between 1989 and 1992. The Pioneers have also had plenty of great players come through their ranks over the years including first-team All-WAC performers Alison Murnane and Cathy Boswell as well as two-time All-American guard Valeria Koussenkova who remains Denver’s all-time leading scorer with 2133 points. Other notable players include WNBA veteran Loree Payne and two-time All-American Heather Helgeson who went on to become a successful assistant coach at Arizona after graduating from DU. Denver has continued to be successful both on and off the court under current head coach Kerry Cremeans.
