The UNC Wilmington Seahawks baseball team has a long and proud history of success. The program was founded in 1971 and since then, the team has gone on to become one of the most successful programs in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Seahawks have won three regular season championships and four CAA tournament titles. They have also made six NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 2002. Home games for the Seahawks are played at Brooks Field, which is located on campus at UNC Wilmington. The stadium seats 4,000 fans and features a state-of-the-art playing surface. It is also home to some of the best rivalries in college baseball, such as against East Carolina University and North Carolina State University.
The head coach of the Seahawks is Mark Scalf, who has been with the program since 2004. He has led them to numerous conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances during his tenure. Under his leadership, several players have gone on to be drafted by Major League Baseball teams or play professionally overseas. The top players for UNC Wilmington include outfielder Nick Feight, who was named CAA Player of the Year in 2018; pitcher Alex Royalty, who was named CAA Pitcher of the Year in 2019; and first baseman Ryan Jeffers, who was named CAA Rookie of the Year in 2017. These three players have helped lead UNC Wilmington to many successes over recent years.
In addition to its regular season success, UNC Wilmington has also had great success in post-season play over recent years. In 2018, they won their first-ever NCAA Regional Championship before advancing to their first-ever Super Regional appearance where they were defeated by eventual national champion Oregon State University. In 2020, they advanced all the way to their second Super Regional appearance before being eliminated by Florida State University. Looking ahead to 2023 events for UNC Wilmington baseball includes hosting an NCAA Regional Tournament at Brooks Field as well as competing for another CAA championship title and possibly making another run at an NCAA Super Regional appearance or even a College World Series berth. With Coach Scalf leading this talented group of players into battle each year, there is no telling how far this team can go!
