The Stanford Cardinal Baseball team has a long and storied history of success. Founded in 1892, the Cardinals have been playing baseball for over a century and have become one of the most successful programs in the country. The team plays its home games at Sunken Diamond located on the Stanford University campus. Over the years, the Cardinals have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including Oregon State, UCLA, and USC. The Cardinals have won numerous awards throughout their history, including seven Pac-12 championships and twenty-five NCAA tournament appearances. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball (MLB), such as Jackie Robinson, Jeff Kent, and John Elway. Currently leading the program is head coach David Esquer who took over in 2017 after Mark Marquess retired from coaching after 41 years with Stanford Baseball.
Esquer has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both Pac-12 and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Cardinals are led by some of college baseball's top players such as pitcher Brendan Beck who was named First Team All-Pac-12 last season after throwing for 85 strikeouts; catcher Maverick Handley who was named Freshman All-American last year after batting .341; outfielder Kyle Stowers who had 10 home runs last season; infielder Tim Tawa who led all hitters with a .372 batting average; and pitcher Jacob Palisch who had nine saves last season. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Stanford Cardinal Baseball will be looking to continue its success from recent years while also building on its rich history of excellence.
