The Rice Owls Baseball team has a long and proud history of success at the collegiate level. Founded in 1891, the team has been playing baseball for over a century and has become one of the most successful programs in the country. The team plays its home games at Reckling Park, located on the Rice University campus. Over the years, the Owls have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including Houston Cougars, TCU Horned Frogs, and Baylor Bears. The Owls have won numerous awards throughout their history, including two Conference USA championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball (MLB), including Lance Berkman, Joe Savery, and Anthony Rendon. Currently leading the program is head coach Matt Bragga who took over in 2019 after Wayne Graham retired after 30 years as head coach.
Bragga has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both Conference USA and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Owls are led by some of college baseball's top players such as outfielder Trei Cruz who was named First Team All-Conference USA last season after hitting .335 with 12 home runs; pitcher Hayden Dunhurst who had a 3.27 ERA last year; infielder Braden Comeaux who had 25 RBIs last season; and catcher Dominic DiCaprio who had 34 hits last season. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Rice Owls Baseball will be looking to continue its success from recent years while also building on its rich history of excellence.
