The Long Beach State 49ers Baseball team is one of the most successful college baseball programs in the nation. Founded in 1969, the Dirtbags have been playing baseball for over fifty years and have become a powerhouse in college baseball. The team plays its home games at Blair Field, located on the campus of Long Beach State University. Over the years, the 49ers have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, and Pepperdine. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball (MLB), including Evan Longoria, Troy Tulowitzki, and Jered Weaver. Currently leading the program is head coach Eric Valenzuela who took over in 2020 after Troy Buckley left for Arizona State. Valenzuela has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both Big West Conference and College Baseball News (CBN).
The Dirtbags are led by some of college baseball's top players such as shortstop Garrett Mitchell who was named First Team All-Big West last season after batting .352 with 12 home runs; outfielder Laine Huffman who had a .323 batting average last year; pitcher John Rooney who led all pitchers with 11 wins last season; and catcher Cole Joy who had 10 home runs last year. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Long Beach State 49ers Baseball will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence. With a talented roster full of experienced veterans and promising newcomers alike, there is no doubt that this team will be competitive once again this year as they strive to bring another championship back to Long Beach.

In 2020, the Dirtbags baseball program had a team GPA of 3.17 with 33 players earning a spot on Big West All-Academic Team. This commitment to academic excellence is reflected in their graduation rates which are among some of the highest in college athletics today. Long Beach also takes pride in its community outreach initiatives. The team is involved in a variety of service projects throughout Southern California including volunteering at local schools and working with charities to provide food and clothing to those in need.
