About Indiana State Sycamores Baseball

The Indiana State Sycamores baseball team is an NCAA Division I program based in Terre Haute, Indiana. The team has been playing since the late 1800s and has had a long and storied history. The Sycamores have had many great players over the years, including Hall of Famers like Bob Feller, Lou Brock, and Stan Musial. The team has also seen its share of success on the field, winning multiple conference championships and making several appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Sycamores play their home games at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium. This stadium was built in 2003 and seats nearly 4,000 fans. It is one of the most beautiful stadiums in college baseball and provides an excellent atmosphere for watching games. The team also plays several away games throughout the season against some of its biggest rivals such as Purdue University, Ball State University, and Butler University.

The head coach of the Sycamores is Mitch Hannahs who took over in 2018 after spending five years as an assistant coach with the program. Under his leadership, the team has seen much success including two consecutive Missouri Valley Conference championships in 2020 and 2021 as well as three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament from 2019 to 2021. He also led them to a Super Regional appearance in 2023 where they were eliminated by TCU 6-4 despite starting off strong. The Sycamores have had some great players over the years that have gone on to do great things both on and off the field. Some of these include All-Americans like pitcher Connor Fenlong who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2020; outfielder Tyler Friis who was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2021; infielder Ryan Keaffaber who was drafted by the New York Mets in 2022; and catcher Jack Butler who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023.

Indiana State has also won numerous awards over its history including being named Big Ten Champions four times (1938-39-40-41) as well as being named National Champions twice (1939 & 1941). They have also won numerous individual awards such as Player of Year (Bob Feller 1939), Coach of Year (Mitch Hannahs 2021), Pitcher of Year (Connor Fenlong 2020), Freshman Player of Year (Jack Butler 2023), etc. Overall, Indiana State’s baseball program has had a long and successful history that includes many awards, top players, rivalries with other teams around Indiana, home games at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium, and more recently an appearance at Super Regionals where they were eliminated by TCU 6-4 despite starting off strong.
