Located in the vibrant city of Cedar Park, Texas, near Austin is the professional ice hockey team - The Texas Stars. Home games are held at H-E-B Center where you can watch them compete each season as part of the American Hockey League (AHL). A subsidiary of the NHL's Dallas Stars, they are the team's leading developmental affiliate. Unfortunately in April 2008, Iowa Stars declared that they would no longer be associated with their parent club and as a result changed their name to Chops for the upcoming season (2008-09). During the 2008–09 season, the Dallas team made arrangements to disperse their AHL prospects among four additional teams while a few remained with them. Tom Hicks, the owner of the NHL Stars, was granted a provisional Austin-area AHL franchise on April 28th, 2009. The agreement that accompanied this stipulated that Mr.Hicks purchase an existing AHL team within one year. As part of the Western Conference in the American Hockey League, the Dallas Stars proudly occupy a spot among their peers in Central Division.
These teams included; the Hamilton Bulldogs, Manitoba Moose, Peoria Rivermen, and Grand Rapids Griffins - all of which received Dallas Star prospects at some point or another in time. On May 4th, 2010, the Texas Stars' ownership group officially met all requirements to purchase the Iowa Chops franchise - which had been suspended during the 2009-2010 season. The Stars' first season was nothing short of a success. After claiming second place in the West Division, they won their way to the playoffs against Rockford with an impressive sweep and then went on to make history by securing their very first division championship over Chicago in an intense four-game series! After an intense seven-game series, the Stars won their first Robert W. Clarke Trophy and became Western Conference champions by overcoming Hamilton's team. Regrettably, they were unable to bring home a championship this season after being defeated in game six of the 2010 Calder Cup Finals by Hershey.
After a remarkable season in which the Stars earned the Calder Cup by defeating the St. John's IceCaps, head coach Willie Desjardins resigned to accept an even more prestigious position with Vancouver Canucks. In July 2014, Derek Laxdal replaced him; an individual who already had won a Kelly Cup championship with the Stars' ECHL associate team, the Idaho Steelheads in 2007. Moreover, Tom Gaglardi and his ownership group acquired the Stars that same year - this facilitated them to have control of their AHL affiliate from then on. On June 11, 2015, the Stars proudly unveiled their brand new logo, colors, and jerseys - perfectly aligning with that of their parent club. In 2018, the Stars resolutely marched towards the Calder Cup finals; however, they were eventually bested by Toronto Marlies in a nail-biting seven-game series. During the 2019-20 season, head coach Laxdal's talent was recognized and he advanced to Dallas Stars as assistant coach while Neil Graham took his place as Texas Stars new head coach.
