The Bakersfield Condors are a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL) and are the primary development team for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Condors play their home games at Mechanics Bank Arena in downtown Bakersfield, California. In 2015, the team returned to the AHL after a seven-year hiatus, during which they were members of the ECHL. Prior to their first season in the AHL, the Condors were purchased by the Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) and became that organization's top development affiliate. The Condors began play in 1988 as an expansion team in the ECHL. The team was founded by a group of Bakersfield businessmen who wanted to bring professional hockey to California's Central Valley. The team's first head coach was former NHL player and coach Walt Kyle. The Condors were relatively successful in their early years, winning the West Division title in their inaugural season. The team also made the playoffs in each of their first five seasons in the league. In 1993, the team was purchased by new ownership and relocated to San Diego, California. The team was renamed the San Diego Gulls and played their home games at the San Diego Sports Arena. The Gulls were generally unsuccessful in their years in San Diego, missing the playoffs in all but one season. In 2006, the team was purchased by OEG and relocated to Edmonton, Alberta, where they became the Edmonton Roadrunners, the AHL affiliate of the Oilers.
