About Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator who has made a name for himself in the scientific community. He is best known for his work on popularizing science with the public. In 1996, he became the first African-American to be appointed director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Since then, he has become one of the most recognizable faces in science and has been featured in numerous television shows and documentaries. Tyson’s career began as an astrophysicist studying stars and galaxies. He earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1980 and his doctorate from Columbia University in 1991. His research includes topics such as dark matter, gravitational waves, and the structure of our universe. He has published numerous books on these topics including Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries (2007) and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry (2017). Tyson’s passion for sharing science with the public has earned him several awards including 21 honorary doctorates, two NASA Distinguished Public Service Medals, and multiple Emmy Awards for his educational television series Cosmos A Spacetime Odyssey (2014).

In 2019, Neil Tyson was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama. Tyson’s influence can also be seen through his advocacy for space exploration. He is a strong proponent of sending humans to Mars within our lifetime.
