Ina Rosenberg Garten, an American writer and presenter of the Food Network show Barefoot Contessa, was formerly a White House Office of Management and Budget employee. She has released a number of cookbooks, the latest of which is entitled "Make It Ahead."
Garten was born on February 2, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. She is the only child of Charles and Florence Rosenberg. Her father was in the fur business and her mother was a housewife. When she was young, her family moved to Stamford, Connecticut. Garten attended Stamford High School, where she met her future husband, Jeffrey Garten. They married in 1968 and have two children together: a son named Jesse and a daughter named Isabel. After high school, Garten attended Syracuse University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science. She then moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the U.S. government's Office of Management and Budget during the Nixon administration.
In 1972, Garten quit her job in the White House to move with her husband to New Haven, Connecticut, so he could attend Yale University's School of Management. While Jeffrey was in school, Garten began working in a local gourmet food store called Banner's. She eventually became the store's buyer and manager. It was during her time at Banner's that Garten started experimenting with cooking, and she soon developed a love for it.
In 1978, the Gartens moved to Westport, Connecticut. Jeffrey had taken a job as an investment banker, and Ina started working on a cookbook. The couple also opened a gourmet food store called Barefoot Contessa. The store was successful, and in 1996, the Gartens sold it so they could focus on other projects, such as Ina's cookbooks and television show.
Ina Rosenberg Garten is the author of eleven cookbooks, the latest of which is "Make It Ahead." She is also the host of the Food Network show Barefoot Contessa. Garten has won multiple awards for her work, including the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Television Personality in 2010.
