Join the Embassy Theatre as it commemorates The Iron Horse as well as 100 years of excellent silent films. Participants will be taken back in time to the early days of Hollywood, when silent pictures filled the screen and the pipe organ filled the auditorium with beautiful melodies. The Iron Horse is the series' concluding movie. Organist Dennis James will provide musical accompaniment for the movie on the Grande Page Pipe organ.
The Iron Horse, a silent western, tells the tale of the construction of the first transcontinental railroad from the perspective of one man. Davey (George O'Brien) is faced with obstacles and is forced to discover a solution to cut the railroad's path by 200 miles. Iron Horse has been chosen for the National Film Registry's preservation list.
For more than 50 years, Dennis James has been a key figure in the worldwide resurgence of silent films accompanied by live musical performances that are historically accurate, thoroughly researched, and aesthetically preserved. In the late 1960s, while studying music and film at Indiana University, he created his professional preservation methodology. James performs to silent films with meticulously prepared solo organ, piano, and chamber ensemble accompaniments while touring the world with the Silent Film Concerts production company. He also makes appearances with important symphony orchestras across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
James is recognized for offering the widest variety of silent films and live musical presentations that are currently available, both of which are historically accurate. In a career filled with partnerships, Dennis James toured throughout the 1980s with silent cinema actresses Lillian Gish, Myrna Loy, Fay Wray, and Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers providing musical accompaniment on national tour revivals of their motion pictures. James is now a regular performer at annual events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia as well as the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and the Pordenone and Rome Festivals 'Cinema Muto' in Italy. He was previously a featured solo performer on the international film festival circuit.
