He is taken in by a gang of thieves, led by the elderly Fagin.

He is sentenced to be transported to Australia. However, Fagin's associate, the repulsive Bill Sikes, convinces him to break into a house in order to steal a silver candlestick. During the burglary, Oliver is shot and left for dead by Sikes.
He is saved by Nancy, Sikes's girlfriend, who risks her own life to get help. However, Nancy is later killed by Sikes in a fit of rage. Oliver is taken in by the kindly Mr. Brownlow and finally has a chance at a happy life.
However, Fagin's gang kidnaps Oliver in order to get their hands on the incriminating evidence that he possesses. A dramatic chase ensues and Oliver is finally saved. The evil Fagin is arrested and hanged for his crimes, while Oliver lives happily ever after.
The novel on which the film is based, Oliver Twist, was written by Charles Dickens and published in 1838. It was one of Dickens's most popular novels and helped to raise public awareness of the plight of orphans and child criminals in Victorian England.
The film was a critical and commercial success, receiving positive reviews from critics and winning several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Fagin. It was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
