Established in 1977, the Big Apple Circus has become a renowned tourist destination and nonprofit organization based in New York City. By presenting awe-inspiring circuses to thousands of individuals each year, this unique attraction is sure to leave lasting memories. The circus is acclaimed for its community support efforts such as Clown Care and its compassionate approach to animals. Gregory Fedin and his ex-wife Nina Krasavina, both born and educated in Russia, launched a circus school to educate the first generation of aspiring circus performers. Housed in a cozy loft located in downtown Manhattan, they built the beginnings of their small school. Paul Binder and Michael Christensen helped the circus couple create the Big Apple Circus, fashioned after European-style "one ring" circuses to the big top. In 1977, Big Apple Circus was brought to fruition by founding chairman Alan B. Slifka when he secured a fairground in Battery Park for its debut. Kicking off the early shows were a variety of performers, including single trapeze artists, jugglers, tight-rope walkers, and clowns. Later acts showcased double trapeze stars alongside an array of talented animal performers. As it ushered in the new decade, The Big Apple Circus commemorated its staff and customs with a spectacular holiday celebration. Then from 1981-2015, patrons were delighted to witness this wondrous attraction at Damrosch Park of Lincoln Center with the death-defying tight-rope walkers. At a renowned forensic competition in Paris, the circus proudly accepted their silver medal in 1982 as recognition for their outstanding performance. In 1994, Gary Dunning assumed the role of executive director at Big Circus, and a year later Peter T. Grauer stepped into the shoes of Chairman, succeeding Patricia Rosenwald. In 2001, the world's most iconic clown - "Grandma" the Clown (played by Barry Lubin) - was officially inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame. Barry got a fitting recognition for their outstanding performance. In the aftermath of September 11th, 2001, the circus paid homage to New York City with an inspirational show titled "Dreams of a City". In September 2018, Big Apple Circus proudly welcomed Stephanie Monseu of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus as their newest ringmaster for the 41st season. Three of our most esteemed acts included Duo Fusion, Spicy Circus, and The Flying Tunizianis. Additionally, attendees were offered an exclusive VIP experience known as the Mirror Room. This remarkable opportunity allowed ticket-holders to enter a quaint wooden Spiegeltent filled with delicious food and drinks, take pictures with performers, and even have private conversations. Nik Wallenda who was hailed as "The King of The High Wire" and the "Greatest Daredevil of Our Generation," always astound the audience. No wonder they've got great fan reviews!
