In a 150-year-old farmhouse in Greensboro, Vermont, Rob Mermin founds Circus Smirkus, according to news reports from the New York Times, Boston Globe, USA Today, Yankee Magazine, and People Magazine. The first time that Project Harmony and a guest group from Tblisi, Georgia, the USSR, collaborated. Smirkus is the first American youth circus to tour internationally, an event that takes place in 1987. In 2012, Smirkus becomes the first international touring youth circus, with a two-week run in China. Since its inception, Circus Smirkus has toured throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. The troupe has also performed in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In 2017, the circus celebrated its 30th anniversary with a sold-out run at the Big Top in St. Louis, Missouri. Circus Smirkus is known for its commitment to carrying on the traditions of the traveling circus. The troupe features acrobats, jugglers, clowns, unicyclists, and aerialists, all of whom are between the ages of 10 and 18. The performers are trained at the Circus Smirkus Center for Circus Arts, which is located on the troupe's farm in Greensboro. In addition to its touring circus, Circus Smirkus also offers camps, workshops, and educational programs. The organization's mission is to "engage young people in the joys of physical activity, artistry, teamwork, and commitment while building self-confidence and inspiring creativity."
