His work with the Grateful Dead has been anthologized on several albums, including Live/Dead, American Beauty, and Europe '72.
Lesh was born in Berkeley, California, on March 15, 1940. He began playing the violin at the age of eight but switched to the trumpet a few years later. Lesh was a member of the Berkeley High School Band and Orchestra. He enrolled at Mills College in Oakland, California, intending to study music composition.
Lesh's interest in rock and roll led him to drop out of college after only a semester. He joined the band Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, which later evolved into the Grateful Dead. Lesh played his first gig with the Dead on December 31, 1964.
