Rock in Rio is a recurring music festival originating in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It later branched into other locations such as Lisbon, Madrid and Las Vegas. The Rock in Rio festivals are held on a citywide scale, where streets are closed off to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of people that come to attend the event each year.
The first edition of the festival was held from January 11–20, 1985, in Rio de Janeiro. It was organized by Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina and attracted a crowd of 1.5 million people to the city, becoming the largest rock festival in South America at the time. The event's name refers to the fact that it was held during Carnaval, when many Brazilians celebrate by going to the streets to sing and dance.
In 2001, Medina organized a second festival, Rock in Rio II, which was held from January 12–21. This edition featured a lineup of international artists such as Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Guns N' Roses, in addition to Brazilian bands. The event drew a crowd of approximately 350,000 people.
The third festival, Rock in Rio III, was held from October 9–13 and featured a mix of Brazilian and international artists such as Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters and Sting. This edition drew a crowd of over 450,000 people.
The most recent edition of the festival, Rock in Rio IV, was held from September 13–15 and featured a mix of Brazilian and international artists such as Muse, Rihanna, Metallica, Bruno Mars and Coldplay. This edition drew a crowd of over 700,000 people.
In 2013, Medina announced that the fifth edition of the festival, Rock in Rio V, would be held in 2015. The event is scheduled to take place from September 18–27, and will feature a mix of Brazilian and international artists.
