About Zachary Williams

Zachary Stephen Williams is an American Christian rock music artist from Jonesboro, Arkansas. Williams was the lead vocalist, bassist and guitarist of the American Christian rock band Living Things from 1992 until their dissolution in 1998. In 1999, he co-founded the rap metal band Rage Against the Machine, which he fronted with rappers Zack de la Rocha and Tim Commerford, as well as drummer Brad Wilk. Williams was the band's primary lyricist and co-songwriter, with de la Rocha.

After leaving Rage Against the Machine in October 2000, Williams formed Audioslave with Wilk, Commerford, and Tom Morello, whom he had met while touring as part of Rage Against the Machine. With Audioslave, Williams achieved commercial success, but the band was short-lived; they broke up in February 2007.

Williams released his first solo album, The Ghost of Tom Joad (1996), under the pseudonym "Pancho Sanchez", which won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. His second solo album, Electric Ladyland (1998), was released under his own name to critical acclaim and commercial success. In 2002, he formed the supergroup Prophets of Rage with Morello, Wilk, and Chuck D of Public Enemy. He also contributed vocals to Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" (1994) and Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike" (1991). Williams has been ranked at number 66 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers" list. He is also a member of the UK Music Hall of Fame, having been inducted with Rage Against the Machine in 2006.

Williams was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and raised in Liberty Park, Arkansas. His mother, Lara Lyn Williams, was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. His father, Zack Williams, was a musician who had played in various bands, including Frankie Laine and his Orchestra. Williams has English ancestry.

As a child, Williams attended local Christian churches and was exposed to a variety of religious music. He particularly liked gospel music, and often sang in his local church.

At the age of 12, Williams began playing guitar in a garage band called Youthful Expression. He cites Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as his biggest influences.

Williams attended high school at Mills University Studies High School, a magnet school in Little Rock, Arkansas. According to Williams, he was "about as unassuming and shy a person you'd ever meet", and was "pretty much a wallflower" during his time in high school.
