Michael W. Smith is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has achieved success in both the contemporary Christian and mainstream music markets. Born in Kenova, West Virginia, Michael began playing music at a young age and was heavily influenced by his father's love of bluegrass. After graduating from high school, he moved to Nashville to pursue a music career. He released his debut album The Michael W. Smith Project in 1983 which featured the hit single "Friends". This single earned him a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, making him the youngest artist to ever win this award. Throughout his career, Michael has released more than 20 studio albums, including classics such as Go West Young Man (1990), Change Your World (1992) and I'll Lead You Home (1995). His albums have earned him numerous awards including two Grammys and four Dove Awards.
His songs have also been featured on various soundtracks such as The Prince of Egypt (1998) and The Passion of the Christ (2004). In addition to his solo work, he has collaborated with other artists such as Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, and CeCe Winans. Michael continues to tour around the world performing his hits as well as new material from his latest album A Million Lights (2018). In 2023, he will be touring Europe with dates scheduled for London UK, Amsterdam NL, and Paris FR among others.
