Yolanda Claire Quartey known professionally as Yola or Yola Carter, is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and actress. She has released two solo EPs, Orphan Offering (2016) and Walk Through Fire (2019). Yola was born in Bristol, England. Her father is from Ghana and her mother is English. She grew up in a musical household; her father was a drummer and her mother was a singer. Yola began singing at an early age and started writing songs when she was eight. She cites Nina Simone, Etta James, Patsy Cline, and Otis Redding as musical influences. Yola's professional career began when she joined the band Phantom Limb in 2006. The band released an EP, Treehouse (2007), and an album, The Pines (2009), on which Yola contributed vocals and songwriting. The band toured the UK, Europe, and the US. In 2016, Yola released her debut solo EP, Orphan Offering. The EP was produced by Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief and features performances by members of that band, as well as John Paul White of The Civil Wars. Yola's debut album, Walk Through Fire, was released on February 22, 2019, on easy eye sound, a label founded by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. The album was produced by Auerbach and features performances by members of his band, The Easy Eye Sound Revue. Yola has toured as a support act for such artists as The Pretenders, Sheryl Crow, and Nathaniel Rateliff. She has also appeared on television shows such as Later... with Jools Holland and Austin City Limits. In 2019, Yola won a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (for Walk Through Fire) and was nominated for Best Americana Album and Best Roots Performance (for the song "Faraway Look").
