Monophonics are an American psychedelic soul band from San Francisco, California. Blue Lotus, Monophonics Orchestra, and Mr. Callisto, three bands that performed on the North Bay music scene, were the ancestors of the current lineup. Late in the spring of 2005, the initial members—guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Yuri Whitman, keyboardist Colin Brown, saxophonist Alex Baky, and trumpeter Ryan Scott—formed an instrumental group that combined Jazz, Funk, Soul, and Afrobeat into a danceable sound. They began by performing at various venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. The band's first album, In Your Brain, was released in 2006 on Ubiquity Records. The band toured the United States and Europe to support the album's release. They have shared the stage with such artists as Karl Denson, George Clinton, Booker T. Jones, The Roots, and have performed at festivals such as High Sierra Music Festival, Outside Lands, Lightning in a Bottle, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Lollapalooza. The band's second album, Sound of Sinning, was released in 2013 on Colemine Records. The album's first single, "Don't Lie to Me", was featured in an episode of the television show Suits. The band has toured internationally to support the album's release, including performances at Austin Psych Fest, Afropunk Festival, and Glastonbury Festival. The band's third album, Synchronicity, was released in 2016 on Tramp Records. The album's lead single, "Turn Me Up", was featured in an episode of the television show Ballers. The band has toured internationally to support the album's release, including performances at Lollapalooza, Afropunk Festival, and Osheaga Music Festival. The band's fourth album, Beats & Pieces, was released in 2019 on Daptone Records. The album's lead single, "Get It Together", was featured in an episode of the television show Insecure. The band has toured internationally to support the album's release, including performances at Lollapalooza, Afropunk Festival, and Osheaga Music Festival.
