Durand Jones started singing in church and doo-wop groups as a kid in a small town in Arkansas. He moved to New Orleans to study anthropology at Dillard University, but after joining the campus’ famed Gospel Choir and connecting with the city’s rich musical heritage, he decided to pursue music full-time. It was there he met keyboardist/producer Andrew Block and drummer/producer Aaron Frazer, and the three began playing shows together. They self-released their debut album, Durand Jones & The Indications, in 2016. The album found an audience beyond their expectations, selling out multiple pressings and garnering widespread acclaim. After he graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Jones headed north to Bloomington, Indiana, where he started a family and got a job as a barista at the local coffee shop. "It was there that I really developed my love for soul music," Jones recalls. "I had always loved Motown and Stax Records, but hearing it in the context of contemporary music was eye-opening for me."
While working at the coffee shop, Jones met Block, who was then attending the nearby Indiana University. The two bonded over their shared love of music and started playing shows together. "We would play these little shows around town, and people really responded to the material," Block says. "It was clear that there was something special happening." After a few years of gigging around the Midwest, Jones and Block decided to move to New Orleans, where they met Frazer and started playing shows as a trio. "The music scene in New Orleans is incredible," Jones says. "It's so rich and diverse, and there's such a strong sense of community. I felt like we could really thrive there." In early 2018, the band signed with Dead Oceans and recorded their follow-up LP. The result is American Love Call, a record that expands on the sound of their debut while delving deeper into the members’ diverse musical influences.
