Yellow Brick Road is a tribute to Elton John. Elton John's seventh studio album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, was released on 5 October 1973 as a double LP. The album was an instant success, reaching number one in both the UK and the US. The album features some of Elton John's most popular songs, including "Bennie and the Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", and "Candle in the Wind". The album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Bernie Taupin penned the lyrics for the song in two and a half weeks under the working titles Vodka and Tonics and Silent Movies, Talking Pictures, and John wrote the most of the melodies in three days while staying at the Pink Flamingo Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. The Rolling Stones had recently recorded Goats Head Soup there, which was one of the reasons John had wanted to visit.
The song is a piano-based ballad, with John's trademark falsetto and a gospel choir providing the backing vocals. The lyrics tell the story of a young man who is disillusioned with life and runs away to find his fortune on the "yellow brick road". The song was released as a single in October 1973 and reached number two in the UK and number 16 in the US.
