Trooper is a Canadian rock band originating from Ontario in 1975. The vocalist Ra McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith were part of another group before Trooper was established. During their early years, the band was discovered by Canadian radio personality Alan Frew while playing at a local bar in Toronto. The group disbanded in 1990 but reformed in 2006.
Trooper's musical style is mainly influenced by hard rock and heavy metal music. Some of their well-known songs include "Raise a Little Hell", "We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)", and "The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar". The band has released ten studio albums, two live albums, and numerous singles. Trooper has been nominated for seven Juno Awards and has won one. They were inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2001.
Trooper celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2010 with performances all year long, many of which broke attendance records. They began the year on February 21 at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Victory Ceremony, which was broadcast across Canada and the world on networks like CTV and MuchMusic, and ended on November 28 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton for the 98th Grey Cup.
Ra McGuire and Brian Smith received the SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2012, which is given to members who have achieved exceptional achievement throughout the course of their careers, mostly in the Canadian music industry. Additionally, they were honored with three SOCAN Classic Awards for "Janine," "General Hand Grenade," and "Raise A Little Hell."
Ra McGuire and Brian Smith, two of the founding members, announced their retirement in November 2021. With Smith and McGuire's support and blessing, Trooper will continue to perform with Gogo, Scott Brown, and Clayton Hill, the longest-serving members of the band. David Steele, a well-known west coast singer, will sing, while veteran Trooper guitar tech Steve Crane will play lead guitar.
