Sir Elton Hercules John is an English singer, pianist and composer. He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date. John has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has won five Grammy Awards, four Brit Awards, two Academy Awards and a Tony Award. In his five-decade career Elton John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, the eldest child of Stanley Dwight (1925–1991) and only child of Sheila Eileen (née Harris; 1925–2017), and was raised in a council house by his maternal grandparents, in Pinner. His parents married in 1945 when the war was over. He has one younger sister, Carolyn, born the following year. Through his mother, John is a cousin of actor Nigel Havers. His father's half-brother, Stanley Dwight, was the father of British pop singer Cliff Richard. John attended Pinner Wood Junior School and then he went to Pinner County Grammar School from 1959 to 1964. As a child he wanted to be a fighter pilot, but when he failed an eye test for the RAF at age 15, his career plans changed.
John has won numerous awards, including the Kennedy Center Honor, two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Tony Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Disney Legends Award, five Grammy Awards, and five Brit Awards, including one for Outstanding Contribution to Music. On its list of the 100 most influential musicians of the rock & roll period published in 2004, Rolling Stone rated him 49th. He is a fellow of The Ivors Academy and was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1998, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his contributions to music and humanitarian work. In 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron gave John France's highest civilian honor, the Legion d'honneur, praising his work on behalf of the LGBT community and describing him as a "melodic genius."
