The band was formed in the early 1970s by high school friends and original members, singer and guitarist Kim Deal, drummer John Murphy, and singer-songwriter Lou Barlow. The band's first album, Pod (1990), was a surprise success, and after signing to Beggars Banquet Records they released their second album, Last Splash (1993). The album was supported by the hit single "Come On Pilgram" and went platinum in the United States.
The band's follow-up album, Title TK (2002), was less successful, but still received some positive reviews. The band's fourth album, Maggot (2003), was met with mixed reviews, but sold reasonably well.
