American guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Tim Reynolds is well-known both as a solo performer and as the lead guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band. Reynolds has been praised by MacKenzie Wilson of AllMusic as "an underrated maestro."
Reynolds' father, a U.S. serviceman, was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, at the time of his birth. Army was based there. Reynolds' mother is German. The family moved back to the United States when Reynolds was three years old, eventually settling in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Reynolds began playing guitar at the age of eleven.
As a teenager, Reynolds was a member of the band Dixie Dregs, which also featured future members of the Dave Matthews Band. Reynolds left the band after a couple of years to pursue a solo career.
In 1988, Reynolds released his first solo album, Tim Reynolds and TR3. The album was recorded live in one take with no overdubs. It was followed by the studio albums Real Time (1989), Stream (1992), and Radiance (1994).
In 1997, Reynolds toured with the Dave Matthews Band as a guest musician. The following year, he joined the band as a full-time member.
Reynolds has released several live albums with the Dave Matthews Band, including Live at Luther College (1999), Live in New York City (2002), Live at Radio City Music Hall (2007), and Live in Las Vegas (2009). He has also released a number of solo live albums, including Live at the Charleston Music Hall (2003), Live at Canebreak (2004), and Live at the Lila Theater (2006).
