Osees are an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California in 1997. The band currently consists of primary songwriter and core member John Dwyer (vocals, guitar), Tim Presley (guitar, vocals), Paul Quattrone (drums, percussion), Brad Caulkins (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dan Rincon (keyboards, synthesizers, saxophone). They have released twelve studio albums, one live album, and numerous singles and EPs.
Osees began as an experimental project of John Dwyer, who at the time was playing guitar in the psych-folk band Rank/Xerox. In the spring of 1997, Dwyer recorded several songs on a four-track cassette recorder under the name Orinoka Crash Suite. The songs were heavily influenced by the lo-fi aesthetic of bands like Pavement and Guided by Voices.
Dwyer subsequently moved to San Francisco, where he met guitarist Tim Presley. The two began playing together under the name Orange County Sound Virus, before changing the name to OCS. The band's earliest shows were played in basements and DIY spaces around the city.
In 1999, OCS released their self-titled debut album, which was followed by a split EP with The Oh Sees in 2000. That same year, the band embarked on their first tour of the United States.
The following year, Dwyer and Presley relocated to Los Angeles, where they were joined by drummer Nick Murray. The band's second album, Memory of a Cut Off Head, was released in 2001.
In 2002, the band shortened their name to The Oh Sees, and released their third album, The Cool Death of Island Raiders. That same year, they toured Europe for the first time.
The Oh Sees' fourth album, Putrifiers II, was released in 2004. The album saw the band further refining their sound, moving away from the lo-fi aesthetic of their earlier work towards a more polished and garage rock-influenced sound.
The following year, The Oh Sees released their fifth album, The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In. The album was recorded in San Francisco with producer Eric Bauer.
The band's sixth album, Help, was released in 2007. The album was their first to be released on Dwyer's own label, Castle Face Records.
In 2008, The Oh Sees released their seventh album, Dog Poison. The album was recorded in San Francisco with producer Eric Bauer.
The following year, The Oh Sees released their eighth album, Floating Coffin. The album was once again recorded in San Francisco with Bauer.
In 2010, The Oh Sees released their ninth album, Warm Slime. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Chris Woodhouse.
The following year, The Oh Sees released their tenth album, Carrion Crawler / The Dream. The album was once again recorded in San Francisco with Bauer.
In 2012, The Oh Sees released their eleventh album, Putrifiers II. The album was recorded in San Francisco with Bauer.
In 2013, The Oh Sees released their twelfth album, Floating Coffin. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with Woodhouse.
The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years, with Dwyer and Presley being the only constant members. Murray left the band in 2006, and was replaced by Brad Bell (aka Brady Welch). Bell left the band in 2008, and was replaced by Ryan Moutinho.
Moutinho left the band in 2011, and was replaced by Nick Murray. Murray left the band again in 2013, and was replaced by Dan Rincon.
The current lineup of The Oh Sees includes John Dwyer (vocals, guitar), Tim Presley (guitar), Paul Quattrone (drums, percussion), Brad Caulkins (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dan Rincon (keyboards, synthesizers, saxophone).
The band has released twelve studio albums, one live album, and numerous singles and EPs. Their most recent album, Orc, was released in 2017.
