The Zombies are an English rock band formed in the early 1960s in St Albans and led by keyboardist and vocalist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone. The band scored British and American hits in 1964 with "She's Not There" and 1965 with "Tell Her No". Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
The band was originally known as The Mustangs, and later The Zombies. The core lineup of Argent, Blunstone, and bassist Chris White were inducted. Drummer Hugh Grundy did not participate in the Hall of Fame induction ceremony; he had earlier indicated that he did not wish to be inducted without original keyboardist and founding member Paul Atkinson, who died in 2004.
The Zombies had a UK hit single in 1964 with their cover of "She's Not There", which reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. In the US, it peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was written by Chris White and Rod Argent and was recorded in a single day on May 18, 1964. The Zombies also had a hit with "Tell Her No" in early 1965, which reached number 6 in the UK and number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The band's next album was titled Odessey and Oracle and was released in 1968. It was not a commercial success at the time, but is now considered one of the greatest albums ever made. It was ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
The group disbanded in 1969, but have reunited several times since then for reunion tours. They continue to perform and tour today.
