The Offspring is an American punk rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1984. Originally consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Dexter Holland, bass and back vocals Greg K., lead guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman, and Ron Welty in drums, the band has had numerous line-up changes throughout its history. The Offspring rose to prominence with their fourth new album Smash (1994), which peaked at number two on the United States Billboard 200. The album, produced by Thom Wilson and featuring the singles "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem", sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, setting a record for highest-ever sales for an independent label release. The Offspring has sold over 40 million records worldwide, making them one of the bestselling punk rock bands of all time. They have released nine studio albums, their latest being Days Go By (2012). The band's first three albums for the independent record labels Epitaph and Nemesis Records were The Offspring (1989), Ignition (1992), and Smash (1994). The Offspring, released in 1989, was the band's only album to receive almost no airplay on radio or television. Their 1996 follow-up album, Ixnay on the Hombre, reached number three on the Billboard 200. The Offspring's commercial breakthrough came with their third album, Smash (1994), which peaked at number two on the United States Billboard 200 and was certified 6x platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and continued to become a mainstream success. It contained their most successful single "Come Out and Play", which peaked at number nine on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also featured the singles "Self Esteem" and "Gotta Get Away". Conspiracy of One (2000) followed, reaching number two on the Billboard 200. The album featured the singles "Original Prankster" and "Want You Bad". Splinter (2003) was the band's first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200, containing the singles "Hit That" and "Can't Get My Head Around You". Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008) was their most recent studio album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The Offspring has also released three compilation albums: Greatest Hits (2005), Complete Music Video Collection (2007), and Summer Nationals (2009).
