The Dirty Knobs first got together 15 years ago after Mike Campbell and guitarist Jason Sinay met during a session and fell in love with the sound of their guitars playing together. While 2020's Wreckless Abandon is their first official release and reason to tour, they first came together 15 years ago.
The Dirty Knobs provided a platform for Campbell to concentrate on some of the other songs he was writing in between Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers releases and touring after the addition of bassist Lance Morrison and drummer Matt Laug to the rhythm section. They got together as their schedules allowed, played music without a plan, timetables, or expectations, pushed the frontiers of taste, imagination, and genres, and performed intermittently, almost covertly, at small venues in Southern California.
Finally, it became apparent that they needed to expand on what they had done. Following the passing of Campbell's longtime countryman, friend, and bandmate Tom Petty, the guitarist realized that returning to his music totally was the only way to deal with the numbing sadness. Before the guitarist embarked on his 2018 tour with Fleetwood Mac, they completed the album in just three weeks in Campbell's home studio. The Last DJ, a 2002 album by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, was co-produced by renowned producer George Drakoulias, who was also chosen by The Knobs to serve as co-producer.
