Horatio Gates Spafford was a prominent American lawyer and Presbyterian church elder who lived from October 20, 1828, to September 25, 1888. He is best known for writing the beloved hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" in 1873. The song was written after a series of personal tragedies that included the death of his four daughters in a shipwreck and financial losses due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Spafford's life was marked by tragedy, but also by resilience and faith. Despite his losses, he continued to serve as a church elder and eventually moved with his family to Jerusalem where he established an American Colony for Christian refugees. His legacy lives on today through his hymn which has been recorded by countless artists over the years including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Amy Grant.
