Songs in the Attic is the first live album by Billy Joel, released in 1981. It contains live renditions of songs that had not been released as singles, and therefore were not well-known to the general public. The album was recorded during Joel's tour of Japan and Asia in the spring of 1982. Some of the tracks on this album, such as "Captain Jack" and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood", would later be released as singles.
Joel describes the Songs in the Attic release as "the one that made everything happen for me," and he credits it with introducing his earlier work to new audiences who had come to appreciate his music after The Stranger. The album was a commercial success, reaching number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over two million copies in the United States. It remains one of Joel's best-selling albums, and has been certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Critical reception to Songs in the Attic was largely positive. Many reviewers praised Joel's songwriting and musicianship, as well as the energy of the live performances. The album has been included on several lists of Joel's best work, and is considered to be one of his essential releases.
The albums issued were: "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," which peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States; and "She's Got a Way," which reached #23 on the same chart; and, most notably, "You're My Home."
