He started out playing the drums, but later switched to guitar and vocals. Livingston attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied jazz guitar. After graduation, he joined The Roots as their frontman. He toured with the band for several years before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2014. Son Little's self-titled debut album was released in 2015 to critical acclaim. The album features a mix of blues, soul, R&B, and hip-hop influences.
