Porcupine Tree is an English rock band formed by musician Steven Wilson in 1987. The band began as a solo project for Wilson, who created all of the band's music. His time as a solo artist ended in 2002 when he formed a three-piece band with Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland. The current lineup includes Gavin Harrison on drums, Richard Barbieri on keyboards, and Colin Edwin playing bass. Porcupine Tree has released seventeen studio albums, four live albums, nine compilation albums, nine video albums, thirteen extended plays, thirty-six singles, and thirty-nine music videos. The band's musical style is highly eclectic; it has been described as "... a cross between Pink Floyd and King Crimson". Porcupine Tree's early recordings were released on the Delerium label, a sublabel of Chimera Music, which was owned by Wilson's colleague Simon Powell.
The first two Porcupine Tree albums, On the Sunday of Life... and Up the Downstair, were progressive rock albums with psychedelic overtones that were not widely known at the time. These releases drew little attention from the music press and were not commercially successful. The album The Sky Moves Sideways was released in 1995 and was a turning point for the band. It was their first album to reach the top 40 on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 37 and featured more experimental song structures and soundscapes than their previous releases. The album was well received by critics, with AllMusic giving it a five-star rating. In 2002, Wilson formed a three-piece band with Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland, which he named Porcupine Tree. The band's first album, In Absentia, was released in September 2002. It was a commercial success, reaching number seven on the UK Albums Chart and selling over 60,000 copies in Europe. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album. The follow-up, Deadwing, was released in March 2005.
It debuted at number eight on the UK Albums Chart and sold over 30,000 copies in its first week. The album was nominated for two Grammy Awards, winning one for Best Surround Sound Album. In October 2008, the band released the album Anesthetize, a 2-DVD/2-CD live album and concert film. It debuted at number 19 on the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album. The band's ninth studio album, The Incident, was released in September 2010. It debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and sold over 30,000 copies in its first week. In 2012, the band released the album Octane Twisted, a 2-CD/2-DVD live album and concert film. It debuted at number seven on the UK Albums Chart. The band's tenth studio album, Hand. Cannot. Erase., was released in February 2015.
