Nicholas Berkeley Mason is an English drummer and co-founder of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. He is the only Pink Floyd member to have remained in the band throughout its entire history. In Pink Floyd, Mason played lead and rhythm guitar on the majority of their songs, although he did not contribute any vocals or lead vocals, as these were provided by either Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, or David Gilmour. Mason initially joined Pink Floyd in 1965 as a replacement for their previous drummer, Mike Salmon. He was the band's only drummer until 1968 when he was briefly replaced by Nick Mason's Junior. In early 1969, Barrett left Pink Floyd and Gilmour assumed leadership of the band. Waters became the primary lyricist and conceptual leader, with Mason and Wright following close behind.
Although Mason is not as prolific a songwriter as either Waters or Gilmour, he has co-written several Pink Floyd songs, including "Careful with That Axe, Eugene", "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", "One of These Days", and "Echoes". He also wrote the lyrics to "A Saucerful of Secrets". Mason is Pink Floyd's only surviving founding member. He has appeared on all of the band's studio albums and played on every Pink Floyd tour from their 1965 debut until Pink Floyd's final tour in 1994. He also appears on several of Pink Floyd's live albums, such as Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse. Mason has been active outside of Pink Floyd since the late 1970s, most notably as a member of Bruce Dickinson's band, TheSAMAs, and as a solo artist. He also published an autobiography, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd, in 2004.
